From our ongoing benchmark survey, 83% of finance directors and managers of healthcare institutions in the Netherlands expect significant changes to occur in healthcare supply in the coming years, as a result of the concluded healthcare agreements aimed at ensuring the accessibility and affordability of the Dutch healthcare system.
Significant impact on planning and steering
Although this is not surprising in itself, discussions following the benchmark survey reveal that these changes will have a significant impact on planning and management within organisations. More than 60% of respondents indicate that there is still insufficient connection between the intended healthcare production, the required capacities and staffing, and the associated costs and revenues. Nevertheless, 81% of them indicate that this connection must be fully established within the next 5 years.
Crucial role
This poses a major challenge. The good news is that much attention is being paid to integrated budgeting and adjustment, whether or not through rolling forecast. However, this requires effort not only from the finance department, but also from the board, line management, medical staff, care personnel and capacity management. Each of these parties plays a crucial role in achieving effective planning and steering to properly manage the necessary changes in healthcare provision.
Fizi meeting 16 April
In the coming period, we will continue the dialogue. First on 16 April with financial professionals from healthcare during the Fizi meeting on Integrated Budgeting in Healthcare. On 23 May, we will specifically address the normative staffing issue. More information will follow later.
